An oil painting on canvas of a folk style townscape by renowned Americana folk artist Charles Wysocki (1928 – 2002). This work features a stylized townscape depicted in three tiers of terrains including dirt roads lined with fences, small-town shops, and horse-drawn carriages. The sea is visible in the top level in the distant background, with a lighthouse on the coast and a single sailboat dwarfed on the horizon. The composition is portrayed in Wysocki’s signature style consisting of intricate delineations, bright colors, and simple shapes. The painting is signed to the lower left. It is presented in a wood frame with a medium brown finish. A frame label is present to the verso.
Son of Polish immigrants, Charles Wysocki was born in Detroit and worked as a sign painter in the American army. In 1954, he enrolled at The Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles, then continued as a commercial artist in Detroit. He was convinced by his wife to pursue fine art and began selling his work in galleries. Wysocki is especially famed for designing and painting award winning annual American calendars since 1971. His work is represented in both public and private collections including the presidential art collection which was contributed during the presidency of Ronald Reagan in 1983.
