A vintage ship’s wheel plaque from the_USS Petrel_. This eight-spoke steering wheel with contrasting wood finish commemorates the USS Petrel ASR 14, a submarine rescue ship that operated from its launch in Savannah, Georgia, in 1945 until its decommission in 1991, with a center-set brass roundel bearing the image of a deep sea diver. A plaque beneath the roundel reads ‘Presented to Cd. E.A. Haselman, USN, Commanding Officer, Oct/76-Feb/79, Fair Winds and Following Seas, from Officers and Crew, USS Petrel ASR-14, ’The Can Do Anytime Ship’. It is affixed with a hanger to the verso.
