Late 15th-Century Hand-Painted Miniature Illumination from French Book of Hours

A hand-painted miniature illumination vellum leaf from a French Book of Hours, circa 1470 near Rouen, France. The work depicts a Pentecost scene with the Virgin Mary and the Apostles receiving the Holy Spirit, the fifteenth day after Easter. The miniature illumination is surrounded by acanthus leaves and flowers. The page opposite includes Latin text with three drop caps. A wide variety of inks are used including gold, brown, blue, green, red, and yellow. The page is held in off-white matting windows with descriptive inserts detailing the inscriptions, wrapped in protective plastic.
