Antique Morbier or Comtoise Wall Clock

Item Details

An antique Morbier or Comtoise wall clock. Clocks similar to this one were made outside of the large French cities by clockmakers and villagers who assembled the clocks. Families might specialize in producing particular parts which were then combined to make a relatively inexpensive version of much grander clocks. The metal plates around the face were made of very thin sheets of brass pressed and molded into intricate scenes or types of decoration. The surround on this clock is marked ‘Depose’ in one corner and it features a scene with a cross and several people praying. This particular clock has a white face with black Roman numerals, a brass bezel, two key arbors, and brass filigree hands. It is marked ‘Julien Lassa/a St. Geours de Maremnes’. (St. Geours de Maremnes is a small town in the southwest of France.) There are two weights and a large brass lyre pendulum. The Morbier clocks were designed to strike twice, once at the hour and then again about two minutes later. The works, face, and decorative molding are housed in a simple oak bracket. Untested.
