An oil painting on canvas titled Old Shops – Brittany by well-listed Post-Impressionist artist Harry B. Lachman (American; 1886-1975). Portrayed with thick textural impasto and suppressed detail, this work features a village street scene with townspeople selling and buying goods alongside village buildings in Brittany. The work is signed ‘H.B. Lachman’ to the lower left. It is presented in a distressed light brown wood frame with a canvas liner and a gold-tone sight edge. Affixed to the lower edge of the frame is a metal name plate engraved with the title and artist’s name.
Born in Illinois, Harry Lachman studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Although he began as a magazine illustrator, he became known for his Post-Impressionist paintings. Later in life, he worked as a film director for Fox Films. His paintings have been exhibited at countless art institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musee du Luxembourg, and the Los Angeles County Museum, to name a few.
