From the library of William Kavanaugh Doty (1886- 1956)

William Kavanaugh Doty was born near Richmond, Kentucky in 1886. He attended several colleges, Transylvania, University of Virginia and William and Mary where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1912. He returned to the University of Virginia to receive his LL.B and his M.A. in 1913 and 1917 respectively. He taught English and History at various schools and finally settled in 1919 in Annapolis as a faculty member within the English Department at The United States Naval Academy where he remained until his retirement in 1947. He was the winner of numerous college and university awards, and was the author and editors of several books.

Doty’s Aunt, Mary Kavanaugh Oldhan Eagle was the wife of Arkansas Governor James Philip Eagle, (1889-1893). As First Lady of Arkansas, her progressive attitude, active involvement in politics and women’s suffrage and international concerns provided a precedent for future Arkansas First Ladies. Doty’s Uncle, Kie Oldham was Arkansas State Senator from 1907-1909.
