Charles W. Thwaites Oil Portrait on Masonite
Item Details
An oil portrait on masonite of a woman listed American artist Charles Winstanley Thwaites (1904 – 2002), created in 1956. This painting features a detailed profile portrait of a woman in a white embroidered dress holding a hand fan rendered with saturated hues. It is signed and dated in paint to the lower right corner. This painting is presented without glass in a silver and pink painted wooden frame with decorative incising.
Although he began studying engineering, Charles Thwaites eschewed engineering to study art at the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee under Gerrit V. Sinclair. In the 1930s, he worked as a WPA artist painting murals in various states. He married Antoinette Gruppe (1908-1991), another WPA artist, in 1941; he and his wife eventually settled in New Mexico where Thwaites became known for his portrait series of Taos Pueblo natives. His work has been exhibited by numerous institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Milwaukee Art Center, and the West Bend Art Museum, among others.
