A late 19th-century 42-star American flag. This dyed silk flag with a gold fringe on three sides represents the official US flag for 243 days between the admission of Washington state in November 1889 until Idaho’s admission in July 1890 as the forty-third state; the 42-star flag was accurate for such a short time that it never became official. This piece is presented mounted under glass in a wooden frame with a wire hanger to the verso.

- darning to upper right corner of flag; wear consistent with age; small nicks and scratches to frame.
