A pair of circa 1930s sculpted bronze clad bookends designed by John Ruhl. This set of bookends depicts the form of a seated Roman scholar draped in cloth and holding an etched piece of parchment. Each sits on a base marked ‘J Ruhl’. John Ruhl (1873-1940) was an American sculptor of German descent. His involvement in turning his sculptures into bookends began in 1915 and lasted until his death.
