Vintage silverplate figural napkin ring
Item Details
A delightful Victorian silverplate figural napkin ring depicting a young lady carrying a basket of flowers. The cylindrical wide ring itself is embossed with a floral design and a fan shaped panel where one might include an engraved name or sentiment (it remains blank). The bottom is stamped with a scale symbol and reads ‘Middletown Plate Co.’, ‘Quadruple Plate’ with the pattern number 107. These napkin rings were popular gifts in the late 1800’s, given for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, etc. They were a ‘must’ for any well dressed table yet they were functional as well as fanciful, allowing each individual’s napkin to be used several times before being laundered (as most households did not have a hired laundress). The Victorians understood the spread of sickness through germs and keeping napkins separate was an important deterrent to the outbreak of illnesses. Many napkin rings are engraved with a name or a sentiment and themes of nature or animals were popular. This napkin ring would be a welcome addition to any collection.
