Michael Finster Offset Lithograph on Paper "The Lake of Hellfire and Brimstone"
Item Details
A limited edition offset lithograph on paper titled The Lake of Hellfire and Brimstone by outsider folk artist Michael Finster (American, b. 1969), after the original paining executed in 1995. Female figures swim and attempt to climb their way out of a fiery ‘hell’ with devilish figures and snakes foiling their escape. Snippets of text appear throughout the composition providing commentary on the gruesome scene. Inscribed in plate to the lower right and signed below the margin in graphite. Titled to the lower center and numbered edition 56 of 700 to the left. The work remains unmounted and unframed.
Grandson of the legendary folk artist, Howard Finster, Michael was born in Georgia in 1969 and dropped out of high school to help paint with his grandfather. Michael would help paint and cut plywood for Howard. His work features similar imagery of religious and natural subject matters, but also often includes fantastical depictions of aliens, dinosaurs and mythical creatures. Like Howard, he numbers his works and has completed over 4,000 pieces.
