Kuna Mola Textiles and Book "About Molas"

Item Details

A collection of Kuna mola textiles and and 1969 book ‘About Molas’. This group features seven molas, a handcrafted textile unique to the Kuna, an indigenous group of Panama and Columbia. The panels form part of traditional Kuna clothing, derived from the practice of body painting. Each piece is composed of layers of fabric stitched together and selectively cut away to create complex geometric designs, finished with hand embroidery. Depicted are creatures including birds, snakes, lizards, and fish. They are accompanied by a 1969 text ‘About Molas’ by Dr. Horace G. Loftin and Dr. Edwin L. Tyson of Florida State University’s Isthmian Anthropology Society.
