An oil painting on canvas titled At the Foundation by well-listed American artist William Baptiste Baird (1847-1917). This work features a village scene with horses, chickens, dogs, and a couple people gathered in the town square around a monumental fountain; the village town buildings fill the rest of the scene. The painting is signed ‘WB Baird’ to the lower right, above an additional inscription that reads ‘Paris’. The composition in presented in a decorative gold-tone wood frame.
Born in Chicago, William Baptiste Baird moved to Paris and studied painting under Adolphe Yvon (1817-1893). He exhibited his work at the Paris Salon from 1872 until 1899. He is mostly known for his Realist paintings of farm animals and other rural subjects. Other institutions where his work has been exhibited include the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Wadsworth Atheneum, among others.

- painting has been cut and relined with canvas; repaired puncture present in lower central area of composition; rubbing and paint loss along painting edges; faint scratches and scuff marks scattered throughout painting; wear in frame includes chips, finish loss, scratches, and stains throughout; composition is loose in frame and needs securing.
