A 1938 print on laid paper from etched plate by the artist Aristide Maillol (1861 – 1944) for the book, Livret de Folasteries, by the French poet Pierre de Ronsard (1524 – 1585), and published by art collector Ambroise Vollard (1866 – 1939). The edition was limited to 230 printings. This piece features a lover’s embrace among the foliage. It is visibly unsigned and undated; wooden frame with protective glass and a green silk single mat. A label provides information on the piece, original purchase, dates, and book title to the verso.
Aristide Maillol (1861 – 1944) was born in Banyuls-sur-Mer, Roussillon, France and moved to Paris to study art in 1881. In 1885, he studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Cabanel at the École des Beaux-Arts. Maillol is best known for his work as a sculpture, painter, illustrator, and etcher.
