An oil painting on canvas coastal landscape scene by listed American painter James Brade (J.B.) Sword (1839-1915). Depicted is a rugged coastal scene along a jostling sea under an ominous grey sky. Seagulls fly over head as the waves crash down upon the boulders. Signed to the lower left in paint. Presented without glass, housed in a late 20th-century black and gold-toned frame.
James was born in Philadelphia in 1839 and spent his childhood in Macao, China. He moved to Pennsylvania in his early teens. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1861 and by 1863 had studied with American landscape painter George W. Nicholson (1832-1912). Sword is known for his landscape and genre paintings depicting scenes from the eastern United States and Pennsylvania especially. His work can be found in the collection of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. His 1911 portrait of American politician J. W. Jones (1791-1848), and former speaker of the House, still hangs in the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Condition
- long scratch along the bottom edge of the canvas; areas of the canvas have been cleaned and aggressively cleaned around the signature; scratches and marks to all four corners of the frame; some minor scratches and dents to the frame; large patch to the verso of the canvas from repairment; foxing and stains throughout canvas verso.
