A monumental acrylic painting on canvas titled Mammals in Space by Joseph Drapell, executed in 2000. A wide spreading tool is used to create a large sweeping circular forms more or less centered in the rectangle with a ground is a lustrous, glittering orange colors. Inspired by Noland’s centered circles and the idea of ‘process painting’ which was ultimately influenced by Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings.

Joseph attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art between 1968-1970. He was a guest artist at the Emma Lake workshop in 1988. Member of the New New Painters, a group of artists brought together by the first curator of modern and contemporary art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Dr. Kenworth Moffett in 1978. He founded The Museum of New New Painting in Toronto, dedicated to showing his and the other members of the group’s work.
