An oil painting on canvas autumnal still life by Anton Otto Fischer (American, 1882-1962). Depicted is a rich floral bouquet and small jardinière from which the flowers spill. Deep red foliage contrasts with white flowers and tan leaves scattered about the composition. Signed to the lower left, ‘Anton Otto Fischer.’ Presented in a wood frame with a reeded motif and without glass.
Anton Fischer was born in Munich, Germany in 1882. He was orphaned as a young boy and ran away at the age of fifteen. He found his way to New York in 1903, working on a German shipping vessel. Fischer bought his freedom from the vessel he was on and continued to sail on American ships working for brief periods as a printer’s devil and general handyman for artist Arthur Burdette Frost (American, 1851-1928). In 1906, he left for Paris where he studied at l’Academie Julian with Jean Paul Laurens (French, 1838-1921). Upon his return to New York, Fischer began illustrating for such magazines as The Saturday Evening Post and Harper’s Weekly_. Among his illustrated books were Moby Dick, Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and Treasure Island. His paintings can be found in collections such as the Coast Guard Academy collection in New London, Connecticut, the Mystic Seaport Museum, Connecticut, and the Kendall Whaling Museum, Sharon, Massachusetts.
