An acrylic painting on canvas titled Study for Miracles Wall by Archie Rand, executed in 1977. The painting is a study for his work at the B’nai Yosef Congregation who commissioned Rand to complete 16,000-square-foot interior surfaces of the synagogue with painted murals. Vertical and horizontal strokes of muted color appear geometric, defined by sweeping colors. The colors are loose and gestural with and exactness in their placement.

Archie Rand is currently a Professor of Art at Brooklyn College and celebrated artist whose list of achievements is nothing less than impressive. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1949 and studied at the Art Students League of New York and at the Pratt Institute receiving his BFA in cinegraphics. Rand’s paintings stylistically follow the influence of the color field painters and conceptual art themes while often tackling a sense of controversy and social commentary. This is seen in his early The Letter Paintings and in his controversial murals for the B’nai Yosef Synagogue. His murals are presented with a startling completeness that demands to be viewed. Rand was revolutionary in the movement of Jewish-American art and he is recognized for his color field inspired style.
