Silas Martin Original 19th Century Watercolor Landscape
Item Details
paper
An original 19th-century watercolor painting on paper by well-listed Ohio artist and educator Silas Martin (1841 – 1906). The painting depicts a remarkably detailed view of a reflective river cutting across a wide, flat landscape. Massive trees and pale clouds frame the water, which is lined with tall grasses and painted in neutral shades applied in short, delicate strokes. The painting is matted in white silk and is presented in a contemporary composite frame with silver tone finish and no glass. A hanging wire is attached to the verso. Martin studied under prolific Cincinnati painter John Witt (1840 – 1901). After spending much of his life traveling extensively and living across the country, Martin spent the last 7 years of his life serving as the head of the Art Department at Ohio State University.
