Contemporary Wooden Ship's Box with a Plaque for the "Young America"

Item Details

A contemporary wooden and metal ship’s box. This sold wooden box features a dark wood finish with a lattice-shaped carving to the top with a brass plaque reading ‘Capt. David Babcock, Clipper Ship, Young America 1853.’ The top opens via an oversized brass ring to reveal a green felt-lined interior storage space within. A studded brass band encircles the body of the box, which rests on a solid plinth base.

Industrialist William Webb launched the three-masted clipper ship Young America in 1853 in New York City. Renowned for its speed, the ship completed many notably speedy journeys, including one from Liverpool, England, to San Francisco in 99 days, a record for the time. After having survived the loss of its masts three times, the Young America was sold to an Austrian company in 1883 before being lost at sea without a trace in 1886.
