Valetta Swann Pastel Drawing of Two Women
Item Details
Pastel on paper
A pastel drawing of two women by well listed English artist Valetta Swann (1904-1973). This drawing depicts two barefoot women wearing long skirts and carrying cylindrical items. The figures are simply drawn and appear against a background of graduated color from deep orange to bright yellow. The texture of the paper is left exposed on the women’s clothing and skin. It is the contrast between the natural paper and pastel that gives this piece such depth and movement. Swann spent much of her art career in Mexico and is known for depictions of the indigenous people of that country. The drawing is signed and dated (62) to the lower left.
