1790 Hester Bateman and Other Sterling and Coin Silver Spoons
Item Details
A collection of sterling and coin silver spoons. This includes two serving spoons from 1790 by London silversmith Hester Bateman (active 1776-1790), stamped to the back with the maker’s mark ‘HB’ and four hallmarks including a lion for sterling, a crowned leopard’s head for London, a ‘p’ for 1790 and a George III duty mark. These are presented with four teaspoons in the Marquis pattern by Frank M. Whiting and a spoon by Paye & Baker Manufacturing Co. (active 1901-c.1960). Also included are three coin silver fiddle handle spoons by silversmith John Foulk Robinson of Wilmington, DE (active 1842-1867). The serving spoons feature ‘U’ engraved to the handles, and the fiddle handle spoons have ‘MJ’ engraved to their handles. The total approximate weight is 8.295 ozt.
