John P. Stewart Oil on Linen Titled "Monument Hill Storm"
Item Details
An original signed oil on linen landscape painting titled Monument Hill Storm c.1980 by listed Cincinnati artist John P. Stewart, an esteemed professor at the University of Cincinnati DAAP school. Stewart’s artworks have been featured at several museums and institutions including the Whitney Museum and the Baltimore Art Museum. The visually striking work depicts an expansive gray cloud-filled storm sky with Monument Hill to the right, its distinctive formation highlighted in gold, against the dark gray green of the rock and vegetation, and with sun-lit red rocks to the right foreground. The falling rain is subtly painted, falling in atmospheric sheets to the left. Stewart’s use of color in this piece is all the more stunning as the artist is color blind. The piece is signed by the artist on the back of the canvas as well as to the lower left corner of the work. Displayed in a gilded and beveled wood frame with linen filet. Wired to the back for wall hanging. John Stewart earned a BFA from the University of Colorado and a MFA from University of California in Santa Barbara. He began his teaching career at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, and finished his teaching career at the University of Cincinnati where he started in 1973. His work is widely collected and exhibited with pieces in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art among others. Additional information on the artist is included in the enclosed link.
