An original 20th century oil painting on canvas by listed American artist Howard Ormsby Thomas (Illinois, 1908 – 1971). The painting depicts a dramatic portrait of a young man wearing a pale collared shirt and sweater. He poses formally in front of the viewer, half of his face shrouded in a dramatic shadow. His pale form is set against a dark background, creating remarkable contrast. The painting is signed in red-brown to the lower right and is presented in a dark-stained wooden frame with a hanging wire. Please see the condition box for very important notes.
Condition
- several large rips to upper edge have been patched from verso and poorly inpainted. Significant craquelure across painting. Significant accretion to painting’s surface; it appears someone started cleaning the painting near the lower half of the figure’s face and did not finish. Canvas appears to have been wet at some point, creating notable warping. Canvas is slightly loose and has cracked where it has rubbed against stretcher bars. Verso of canvas has been painted with gesso following repairs. Scratching across frame.
