engraving on paper
An engraving on paper of a young girl by Hans Heyer (Germany). Depicted is a half-torso portrait of a young girl in braids with a floral printed shawl draped around her neck. She stares off to the side, perhaps puzzled by what she sees or intent on watching the subject of her gaze closely. Artist’s signature to lower right corner and Remarque to lower left corner. Presented in a white mat with a protective acetate sheet.
Hans Heyer, born in Germany, was known for his portraiture of women, though additionally he did create various landscape pieces. Heyer used a burin, a specialized cutting tool, to get his precise marks into the copper plating to create the illusion of a smooth, three-dimensional surface. The result is a portrait of a woman that seems pulled from life.
