Charles P. Appel Oil Painting on Canvas of Landscape at Sunrise

An oil painting on canvas by well-listed American artist Charles P. Appel (New York/New Jersey; 1857 – 1928). This Tonalist painting depicts a figure chopping wood under a cluster of trees next to creek as the sun rises beyond hills in the distance. The Romantic work is signed by the artist to the lower left corner reading, ‘C.A Appel.’ The piece is mounted in a wooden frame with an ornate acanthus appliqué. The frame is equipped with a wire to the verso for hanging.
Appel’s works are included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California; and the Montclair Art Museum, New Jersey.
Condition
- discoloration and craquelure; canvas appears to be relined; marks and scratches to the frame; possible frame abrasions to canvas.
