A 19th-century Fischer J. ceramic jug, Budapest, Hungary. Hand painted polychrome enamel decoration depicting a repetitive floral motif. Purple and yellow tones flowers appear among verdant vines and pink flowers. Sitting on a pedestal base with a scrolled handle. Impressed mark to the underside, ‘Fischer J./ Budapest/ 577.’
Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873). His pieces bear the mark ‘Fischer J.’ with the ‘J’ being the same letter as ‘I’ in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.
