English Art Nouveau Display Cabinet by Robson & Sons, Newcastle-On-Tyne

An English Art Nouveau display cabinet. This piece features a central cabinet with a stained glass door front and inlaid marquetry design to the pediment and bottom of the door, and display shelves within. The cabinet is flanked by marquetry panels depicting women’s profiles, with rails and spindles jutting forward at the far edges. Below each is a bowed front door with barrel stave strapping, opening to reveal shelving within. The piece stands on square legs. It is labeled ‘Robson & Sons LTD/Newcastle-On-Tyne’.
Robson & Sons was founded 1835 by Robert Robson, a cabinet maker and upholsterer, who was later joined by his sons. The sons expanded to a factory after their father’s death, and the company operated until it was purchased in the early 1950s.
