19th-Century Fischer J. Reticulated Ceramic Ewer

A 19th-century Fischer J Budapest ceramic ewer, Budapest, Hungary. Hand painted polychrome decoration with gilt accents and four painted scenes of flora and fauna motifs in medallions with embossed borders. The body is a highly reticulated floral pattern with more reticulation in the neck. A bearded facial relief appears to the front of the spout with an animal figural handle with acanthus decoration and footed base. Marked faintly to the underside ‘FISCHER J. BUDAPEST.’
Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873). His pieces bear the mark ‘Fischer J.’ with the ‘J’ being the same letter as ‘I’ in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.
