19th-Century Fischer J. Reticulated Centerpiece Bowl

A 19th-century Fischer J. ceramic centerpiece bowl, Budapest, Hungary. Highly ornate centerpiece with hand painted poylchrome decoration and gilt accents. The base features a scrolling dolphin form with with intertwining acanthus relief and pierced a design. Reticulated bowl with interior ivory colored glaze and floral motif. Marked to the underside ‘FISCHER J./ BUDAPEST.’

Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873). His pieces bear the mark ‘Fischer J.’ with the ‘J’ being the same letter as ‘I’ in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.

- crazing present throughout; some mild paint wear and loss.
