An oil painting on canvas board titled Solitude_ by well-listed artist Florence Smithburn (1904-1989). Portrayed with mostly gradated grays, browns, and a hint of blue, this work features a hazy landscape with a prominent barren tree in the right foreground. Without any people or animals present, the artist captures a sense of stillness and tranquility in the scene. The painting is marked with the artist’s estate stamp to the lower right, and a descriptive label from Cincinnati Art Galleries is adhered to the verso. The painting is presented in a black and bronze-tone wood frame with a ridged relief pattern.
Smithburn is often referred to as a Regionalist painter known for landscapes and still lifes. She studied at the John Herron Art School in Indianapolis and the Art Students League in New York. Her work has been widely exhibited in Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, Atlanta, New York and Indianapolis and has been included in the collections of the Georgia Museum of Art and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
