18th Century Italian Santos in Gilt Robes Wearing a Crown
Item Details
An 18th century carved Italian Santos figure with a painted alabaster face and skillfully carved wavy hair. The figure depicts the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and stands in a dramatic pose above a cloud with a cherub on an ornate corinthian base (likely a later addition). The polychrome gessoed wood figure wears draped robes intricately gilt and decorated in foliate patterns. A high metal crown with colored faceted glass stones is attached at the top of the figure’s head.
EBTH certifies this item is from the private collection of personal property formerly owned by Dr. Robert H. Schuller.
Condition
The caved figure has some gesso loss and the hands are missing. There is one stone missing from the finial of the crown.
