An antique original 1894 oil painting on canvas by well-listed Dutch landscape painter Johannes Bertholomaus Duntze (Netherlands/Germany; 1823 – 1895). The image depicts a stunning Dutch winter landscape in which inhabitants of a small town walk along the frozen lake and snow-covered streets as they go about their daily business. A windmill rises above the entire scene, resting against beautifully painted clouds in a soft, warmly lit blue sky. Artist signature is signed and dated in paint to the lower left. This piece is mounted in a carved beveled wood frame, equipped to hang. An original antique label, inscribed in Dutch likely by the artist, contains illegible details about the painting. A Closson’s Gallery sticker is also attached to the verso. Details of restoration work by Indian Hill Gallery in Cincinnati are attached to the verso.
Condition
- painting has been professionally cleaned and restored; details of treatment are attached to the verso. Inpainting primarily in sky area, where two punctures have been patched. Inpainting appears sporadically throughout painting. Craquelure across painting, sealed with alkyd resin for optimum color preservation. Finish of frame is chipped and worn.
