Item Details
An oil painting on canvas by Harry J. Sunter (b. 1850). The maritime landscape piece depicts a small sailboat carrying five passengers across a glassy lake. The vessel is reflected in the still waters as it sails against an overcast sky and distant hills. The work is signed and dated ‘Sunter 85’ in brown paint to the lower left margin. It is presented without glass in a decorative gold tone wooden frame with embossed floral details to the front and hanging wire to the verso. A gallery label for E. D. Buckingham of ‘173 & 175 Genesee Street, Utica, NY’ is affixed to the verso.
Condition
- surface wear, scratching, toning, foxing and craquelure present to painted canvas, with some small areas of paint loss; significant staining and wear to lower portion of canvas verso, with some damage present; surface scratching, chipping and edge wear to frame; some areas of separation at joints; item would benefit from cleaning; no backing paper present.
