Carlo Bugatti Inlaid Walnut Chair with Vellum Covered Seat

Item Details

An Italian walnut hall chair by designer Carlo Bugatti (Italian, Milan 1855-1940), executed c. 1900-1905. The seat is covered with white leather and backrest of the chair is covered in vellum and both held in place by pierced copper strapping. The unusual downward curved legs are inlaid with pewter in the form of Eastern calligraphic brush painting. The seat has dowel and fan shaped supports clad with repoussé copper. Bugatti’s extremely unique style is the quintessence of Art Nouveau movement drawing from both Japanese and Moorish influences.

Carlo Bugatti was born in Milan in 1855. He studied at the Brera Academy in Milan and later at the Académie des Beaux Arts in Paris. He began manufacturing furniture in Milan in the 1880s under the name, C. Bugatti & C., Fabbrica Mobili Artistici Fantasia. Bugatti was greatly influenced by the Orientalism art movement of the late 19th-century. Carlo was the father of sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti (1884-1916) known for his bronze sculptures of wildlife, and famed automobile designer Ettore Bugatti (1881-1947). Carlo retired in 1935 and died five years later in Molsheim.
