Tom Lovell Charcoal on Paper "Trade Goods - Fort Union"

A charcoal drawing on paper titled Trade Goods – Fort Union by Tom Lovell (1909 – 1997). Lovell was a magazine and pulp illustrator whose work appeared in Colliers, McCalls, and National Geographic. The piece depicts an American Indian man and woman holding a rifle and pail accompanied by a husky holding a bone in its mouth. The work is signed by hand ‘Tom Lovell, NAWA’ (National Academy of Western Art), and dated 1991 to the lower left. The work is presented under glass in a light wooden frame with a wide linen border and engraved brass plaque to its front which reads ‘Trade Goods – Fort Union Tom Lovell’; hanging hardware present to the verso. The drawing was originally purchased from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame at the 1991 National Academy of Western Art juried sale where it received first place for ‘Best Drawing’.
