Victor/Victrola Floor Model XI Turntable in Mahogany Cabinet
Item Details
A Victor/Victrola Floor Model XI turntable in a mahogany cabinet. This piece features a hinged top lid over a 12’ turntable platter lined with green felt and a nickel-plated tone arm. The interior lid is emblazoned with the Victrola logo, reading “Victrola; manufactured by Victor Talking Machine Co., Camden, N.J., U.S.A.”; a second plate on the inside identifies the model and serial numbers, tracing its approximate date of manufacture to May of 1920, the final year of production for this model. In the center of the cabinet are two doors that open to a vented sound chamber, used to increase or decrease the volume, flanked by a detachable crank. A lower set of doors open to reveal eight shelves for horizontal record storage. The entire cabinet rests on short legs terminating in casters.
Founded in 1901, the Victor Talking Machine Company began producing the Victrola Model XI turntable as a tabletop model in 1910, expanding into a floor model two years later. The Model XI established itself as Victrola’s most popular model before being replaced by the VV-100 in 1921.
