Antique Victorian Sterling Silver and Etched Glass Claret Jug
Item Details
An antique Victorian weighted sterling silver and etched glass claret jug, circa 1873. The ewer has a sterling silver spout with a beaded edge, a stamped neck with engraved dots and flourishes, and an ornate foliate style handle. The clear glass body of the ewer has an elongated egg shape, with delicate etched garlands and swirls throughout; and the round, weighted sterling base has beaded trim and stamped designs that match the neck. The underside of the spout is hallmarked with a ‘J’ over ‘EBW’ over another ‘J,’ within a quatrefoil; for John, Edward, Walter & John Barnard (Barnard & Sons). It is also marked with a lion passant, the uncrowned leopard (indicating London), a date mark for the year 1873, and the Queen Victoria duty mark.
