Howard Mandel was born in Long Island, New York in 1917. He studied at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League in New York. Mandel also studied at the studios of Fernand Léger and André Lhote in France from 1951 to 1952 on a Fulbright Scholarship. He started his career as a sculptor and later became a painter.
