Hand-Knotted Ladik Anatolian Prayer Rug

Item Details

A hand-knotted pictorial prayer rug. This wool rug, attributed to Ladik Anatolian weavers, is rendered in a palette of camel, mocha, deep charcoal, and rust. It begins, in the lower two-thirds of the field, with a mihrab supported by two pillars and featuring a chandelier over a camel-colored field. Floating below the chandelier is an elaborate multi-phase vase design, beneath which is a row of flowers and foliage. The upper third of the field is devoted to cityscape imagery, including numerous minarets, buildings, and other architectural details. Framing the field is a primary border containing large, stylized palmettes in a herati arrangement over camel. Selvedges are double overcast, the rug finishing at either end with undyed kilim skirts and warp fringe made of wool with the possible inclusion of camel hair. Unlabeled.
