Hand-Knotted Chinese Carved Area Rug

A hand-knotted and carved Chinese area rug. This wool rug is rendered in a palette of pale mustard, peach-terracotta, cream, and shades of blue. It features an Old Peking-style design beginning with a floral center medallion in peach-terracotta, coral, azure, sapphire, and midnight over a pale mustard field. Above and below the center medallion are a pair of smaller medallions in five shades of blue. Spandrel elements and palette repeat those of the center medallion. The field is framed by a wide primary border, which also repeats the elements of the center medallion over a cream-colored ground. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with short kilim skirts and knotted ivory cotton warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
