A vintage model of a 16th Century 30 oar Mediterranean sailing galley features colorful details and cloth triangular sails painted with red striping. Galleys had been used as warships by the early Mediterranean naval powers, including the Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans, from early in the first millennium BC and remained the dominant ship type until the last decades of the 16th century. It is characterized by the long, slender hull with shallow draft and low clearance between the sea and the railing (freeboard). This model is constructed of wood and sits on small turned wood pedestals painted black that are attached to a rectangular wood support base.
