Gustav Dentzel Hand-Carved Reindeer Sculpture
Item Details
An early 20th century hand-carved Dentzel reindeer sculpture in its original finish. This piece was made by German carousel builder Gustav Dentzel who started the American company, G. A. Dentzel Steam and Horsepower Carousel Company in 1867. This piece is carved from wood and depicts a reindeer mid-gallop. The sculpture features glass eyes, real eight-point antlers, and hand-painted details on the face and ears. A fabric harness is attached to the face and a red rope with bells is hanging off the ear. The reindeer is mounted on a black metal pole attached to a rectangular base.
This sculpture is one of four made for a Santa’s Sleigh Christmas display piece for Macy’s department store. It was later sold to a Boston family before it was purchased by Gore Dean and sold to Clyde’s Restaurant Group in 2006.
