Impressionistic Taos Landscape by Charles Berninghaus (1905-1988)
Item Details
An impressionistic landscape painting in oil on board by Taos artist Charles Berninghaus (1905-1988). The painting illustrates an Aspen forrest dotted with pines under a turquoise sky. A wide path in the foreground leads the viewer through the grove of trees with shimmering yellow foliage. Interestingly, Charles Berninghaus was known to have bartered a painting titled Spring Aspens for a vehicle in 1938. This painting is signed by the artist in the lower left corner and it is presented in a pale wood frame.
Charles Berninghaus was born in St. Louis, the son of well known artist Oscar Berninghaus who was one of the six founders of the Taos Society of Artists at the turn of the century. As a child, Charles spent summers with his father on sketching trips then studied further at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Art Students League in New York. After a short time in New York, Charles became a permanent resident of Taos in 1927, he painted landscapes en plein air almost exclusively in order to catch the “light” of the moment. He exhibited nationally to much acclaim but preferred to live a very simple life in his beloved New Mexico.
