Antique Crayon Portrait of Children with American Flag
Item Details
An antique mid to late 19th-century hand-colored crayon portrait of a pair of children. Crayon portraits were common in the mid-1850s until the early 20th-century, and involved embellishing a faintly developed or enlarged and projected photographic negative with crayon, charcoal, gouache, watercolor, or other necessary medium, to give the portrait the appearance of a hand-painted or drawn work of art, and to edit and conceal blemishes or imperfections. This unique image depicts a young boy and girl standing solemnly in front of a large draped American flag. The image has been heavily embellished with watercolor. It is presented behind convex glass in a thin gold tone metal frame with ornate Victorian cast embellishments to its edges. A hanging wire is attached to the piece’s verso.
