Original German Landscape Painting by Herman Stockmann, 1867-1939
Item Details
An early 20th century oil painting on stretched canvas by German artist Herman Stockmann, signed and dated 1923. The stark landscape depicts a wooden shack in a field with spotty patches of snow under gray, over cast skies. The artist’s signature is clear the lower left corner with the date 1923 and the name of the town ‘Dachau’ (sadly known as the locale of the first Nazi concentration camp from 1933-1945). The painting is professionally finished in a gold wood frame with carved detailing.
Herman Stockman (1867-1939) was the son of a porcelain sculptor in Dachau, he studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts where he later was appointed as a professor. He is known for his landscapes of Dachau and designs for Munich festivals (posters, post cards, signs and banners, set designs, etc).
