An original acrylic painting on paper titled Jacob’s Ladder by well-known Abstract Expressionist artist Darryl Hughto (New York; b. 1943), created in 1981. Depicted is an abstract scene of a ladder rendered in the center of the composition. This piece is from a series of paintings titled the Mystery Suite. This piece is signed, dated, and titled by hand in graphite to the verso. Also, present to the verso, is a dedication to that reads ‘w/ [with] love for Lucy.’ Lucy was the wife of Kenworth Moffett and as was gifted to him on September 19, 1981. Presented unmounted and unframed.

Hughto was heavily influenced by the writings of Clement Greenberg, and several of his works notably made their way into Greenberg’s collection. His reputation was first made in New York, where he held several solo shows in Syracuse, and first at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery. During the early 80s, triangular works were a prominent component of the artist’s oeuvre, and this example dates to 1981 when he was coming into his own.

Hughto still resides in New York and is today closely linked to the Impressionists of the turn-of-the-century. He led the Emma Lake Workshop in 1980 with critic Kenworth Moffett, and this work was dedicated to him and Lucy Baker.
