An oil painting on canvas titled In the Artist’s Garden by Julius Moessel (American, 1872-1960). This painting is a floral study showing a profusion of brightly-colored flowers including lilies and lupines shown against a background of delicately painted foliage. The piece is signed on the lower left, ‘Moessel’ and dated 1943. It is titled on the verso, ‘In the Artist’s Garden’. Displayed in a hand-carved and water-gilded frame by Stephen Motyka of Rhode Island.
Julius Moessel first studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Art under Richard von Seitz. After moving to the United States, he exhibited widely and with success including at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Corcoran Gallery and the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts. Julius Morsel was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards and his work is held in the permanent collections of museums in both the United States and Germany.
