A watercolor painting on cardboard titled Flowers in the Window by Olga Alexandrovna, Grand Duchess of Russia (Russian, 1882-1960). A delicate, cabinet-sized watercolor still-life showing a variety of flowers growing in ceramic pots on the windowsill of Olga’s farmhouse in Denmark, the artist’s home from 1930-48. It is accompanied by a Christmas postcard to the recipient, written by Olga in Danish, which reads: “Thank you so much for your kindness. We have never before had such wonderful venison for dinner. I am writing from your dear mother’s apartment, where we are enjoying ourselves. Merry Christmas, Olga. Dec. 14 1940”. Signed by the artist on the lower right. The piece is unframed.
The daughter of Emperor Alexander III and sister of Tsar Nicholas II, Olga Alexandrovna was an accomplished and award-winning artist who exhibited with success worldwide. Many of her works were given as gifts to her royal relatives and thus her work is rarely available. Today, Queen Elizabeth II enjoys breakfast with nine of Olga’s paintings hanging in the breakfast room at Sandringham.
This painting was a Christmas gift to a neighbor of the artist when she was living at Knudsminde Farm in Ballerup, her Danish home from 1930-1948. It is accompanied by a Christmas postcard to the recipient, written in Danish and in Olga’s hand, which reads: ‘Thank you so much for your kindness. We have never before had such wonderful venison for dinner. I am writing from your dear mother’s apartment, where we are enjoying ourselves. Merry Christmas, Olga. Dec. 14 1940’. This represents a rare opportunity to acquire a work by the artist with impeccable provenance and accompanied by additional, signed historical documentation.
