Robert Elsocht Oil Painting on Canvas "Opalescence"

An oil on canvas painting by Robert Elsocht (American, 1908-1999) titled Opalescence. A stream runs slowly through a snowy landscape populated by trees. The white of the snow and the bark of the birch trees contrasts with the darker trunks and deep shadows cast by other trees. The black, white, and brown of the landscape collect in the surface of the water. The addition of blue makes the surface of the water appear to shimmer like mother of pearl. The work is signed to the lower corner, titled to the verso and is not framed.

Born in Belgium, this listed California artist exhibited widely and with success. Elsocht lived in Berkeley, CA. and favored painting mountainous landscapes in both the Sierras and the French Alps.
